To the editor of THE EAGLE:

As a resident of Lanesborough, a former Lanesborough Elementary School Committee member, and a former Mt. Greylock Regional School District school council member, I find the proposal for Lanesborough to withdraw from School Union 71 to be outrageous. There is no apparent advantage to Lanesborough, its current students, or its future children. The figures that School Committee Chairman Robert Barton is using to say that withdrawing from School Union 71 will save the town money are unconvincing.

The cost of sharing administrative services has been advantageous to the Lanesborough Elementary School. Equally advantageous have been the shared professional development, shared purchasing, curricular alignment, and growing positive sense of community between the towns of Lanesborough and Williamstown. I would like to know what services Mr. Barton is planning on cutting in order to save money. The Lanesborough Elementary School is ranked by the state as a Level 1 school. We cannot afford to compromise the quality of the education that our students receive.

I am hoping that there will be a big turnout by the residents of Lanesborough at the next two School Committee meetings to advocate for the future of the education of our students. The next meeting will be held at the Lanesborough Elementary School on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.
