To the editor of THE EAGLE:

When I worked in Pittsfield from 1987 through 2006 I could see that a number of people I came to know had a mindset that would not be opposed to the hate-thugs with swastikas attacking Richard Rodriguez’s home recently. Peter Albertson’s letter of Feb. 14 properly decried that kind of thing.

This is Black History Month. One thing that is not cited often enough is that genetic science proved about a decade ago [through DNA studies] that every last one of us originated in Africa. It wasn’t all that long ago that these new creatures we call "humans" spread around the world. Even more recently it has been proven that early humans bred with Neanderthals and that we are partly them although in a small way.

For any ignorant, uneducated clump of swastika-wearing haters to exist they must never want to know what really is the case -- that they came out of Africa too. Who are they? Well, I’ve found out that asking some older people if they ever saw the mini-series, of 30 odd years ago, titled "Roots" will get a fast, loud "No!" They also make it point to not celebrate Martin Luther King Day by working it if they can. They quiz others about them working that day too, an indirect form of pressure.

Haters love to blame "others" for their ills. They never have the big picture nor do they want it. It hurts their heads.
