PITTSFIELD -- A man who allegedly stabbed his fiancée just days after they applied for a marriage license is being held on $2,500 bail.

Lawrence McCray Jr., 42, whose address is listed as unknown, was drinking Saturday night with his 46-year-old wife-to-be at the White Terrace apartment of some friends when he picked up a steak knife and stabbed the woman in the left leg, according to police reports. The alleged attack came "out of nowhere," the woman said.

The couple applied for a marriage license last week, according to McCray’s attorney.

The woman was taken to Berkshire Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

The couple had been left alone for about 15 minutes by their friends, who returned to the apartment to find blood on the couch and floor and the woman bleeding heavily from her leg, according to a police report. McCray allegedly had blood on his hands.

A knife believed to have been used in the stabbing was recovered by police.

McCray, appearing with his lawyer, Kenneth G. Warren Jr., pleaded not guilty in Central Berkshire District Court on Monday to charges of felony assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Warren told the court there was a long history between the two involving alcohol and that there were many "cross complaints" where both McCray and the woman were charged with assault and battery on one another.

He said it didn’t make sense for his client "to up and stab his wife-to-be in the leg" and that the truth of what actually happened would eventually come out. Warren asked that his client be released on personal recognizance.

Assistant Berkshire District Attorney Robert Royce pointed to McCray’s long record of assaults and failure to appear in court on prior occasions when requesting $2,500 bail in the case.

Judge Charles W. Groce III said it appeared McCray and the woman were in a "toxic relationship." He ordered McCray held at the Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction in lieu of $2,500 bail.

The defendant is due back in court on March 20.
