To the editor of THE EAGLE:
We need to ensure to the best of our abilities that all of us are informed about city job opportunities and that perceived differences between people are not intentionally or subconsciously used to discriminate due to prejudice and stereotyping. Here are some steps to take to effectively inform all of us about job opportunities.
Provide to each community organizations, by telephone, USPS mail and e-mail, information about city jobs, including school department and union-related job openings.
Create an "opt-in" system, similar to the one the city uses to provide emergency information, that allows users to receive timely information about job openings.
Explore the possibility of having The Berkshire Eagle regularly list the available city jobs on the front page of its "Berkshire" section .
Provide information about city job openings to the high schools, the community college, special vocational programs, and the four-year college in Berkshire County.
Provide a quarterly public report detailing the demographic characteristics of all job applicants, new hires, terminations, and retirees.
Formally publish an annual report about the city’s hiring record with regard to key demographics.
By doing these things, we will be able to more openly discuss why perceived differences between people are interfering with us affirming the existence of all when hiring for Pittsfield city jobs.
