SCRANTON, Pa. -- The last six minutes played out like a heavyweight fight: punch-counterpunch, punch-counterpunch. But the last punch from the Williams women's basketball team missed its mark.
Ellen Cook's 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short of the rim Friday night and the Ephs dropped a 76-75 decision to Vassar College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on the campus of Scranton University.
Cook's 3-point attempt wasn't the only chance Williams had to take the lead late.
Vassar had taken a 76-73 lead with 1:03 remaining, and after Oge Uwanaka made a pair of free throws, the Ephs earned a stop on defense. Devon Caveney found herself with a look from beyond the arc, but it was off the mark.
Williams' defense was good enough to earn one final stop, a steal by Kellie Macdonald with just 7 seconds left on the clock. The rush down the court led to Cook's attempt that fell short.
The Ephs were 5 of 17 from 3-point range in the second half and 8 of 29 for the game.
Williams was making its fourth trip to the NCAAs in the past five years.
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- MCLA's women fell in their first two games of the season Friday. The Trailblazers lost 7-0 to Olivet (Mich.), and fell 3-1 to Newbury.
MCLA was two-hit in the shutout loss to Olivet, with Tanelle Ciempa picking up a double for the Trailblazers. Rachel Quackenbush took the loss on the mound.
Amanda Meczywor and Jennifer Sicinski doubled in the nightcap, but MCLA could only manage a third-inning run and gave up three in the bottom of the sixth. Meczywor took the loss on the hill.
MCLA is back at it Saturday in the Gene Cusic Classic, playing Dominican (Ill.) at 1 p.m.
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- MCLA's men squandered a late lead, giving up single runs in the eighth and ninth innings and falling 6-5 to Eastern Mennonite (Va.) in their season opener Friday.
The Trailblazers had rallied from a 3-0 deficit after 2 1/2 innings with three runs in the bottom of the third, and responded to Eastern Mennonite's fourth-inning run with two of their own in the fourth.
Kyle Matthews' two-out RBI double tied the game in the eighth for EMU, with Ryan Hedrick's RBI sac fly in the ninth plating the go-ahead run.
Chase Preite drove in two runs for MCLA, as did Garrett Alibozek -- his RBI came on a two-run double in the third. Nate Alibozek took the loss on the mound for the Trailblazers, who play a doubleheader against Becker on Saturday.
