LENOX -- Two Western Massachusetts school districts could end up vying for the services of Morris Elementary School Principal Timothy Lee.

In pursuit of his next step up the career ladder, Lee, 49, is among the finalists for superintendent openings in Belchertown and Greenfield.

He told The Eagle this week that he would welcome the challenge of running a school district and pursuing innovative curriculum projects. But he will remain at the Lenox school through June 30 if his search is successful, since those positions would start on July 1.

Belchertown's School Committee, aware of the competition heating up, will interview Lee on Tuesday as one of three finalists for the superintendent's post in the Hampshire County town near Amherst, Northampton and Holyoke. Members of the search committee have already visited the Morris school as part of their evaluation, Lee said.

The School Committee in Belchertown is expected to make its decision on Thursday. The listed salary for the opening ranges from $120,000 to $135,000.

Lee is also among four finalists in the Franklin County city of Greenfield, where interviews are slated next month. The advertised salary there is $135,000. Lee said he has not been told of the timeline for a decision there.

Last October, Lee was a contender for the Northampton superintendent's post, but the district reopened the search.

The Massachusetts Association of School Committees has been involved in both the Belchertown and Greenfield searches.

All of the finalists are licensed to be superintendents in the state, although none have superintendent experience.

Lee, a Great Barrington resident, began his 25-year career in education as a Spanish teacher. He has 18 years of experience as a principal or school director in Connecticut and Wisconsin. He became principal of Morris Elementary in 2008, where he now earns $100,066.
