LENOX -- Tony Bennett must have left his heart in Tanglewood, because he’s coming back.
The 17-time Grammy Award-winning musician will be performing at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 31 in the Koussevitzky Music Shed.
"It’s great news," said Richard Houdek, local writer and editor who covers dance and jazz music for The Berkshire Eagle and other area publications. "He’s remarkable. He has such great staying power."
With worldwide record sales in the millions, and dozens of platinum and gold albums to his credit, Bennett is a musician with a long list of achievements, spanning more than 60 years, including the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. His signature pop-music classics, such as "Steppin’ Out With My Baby" and "I Left My Heart In San Francisco," form part of the fabric of American music culture.
"After all of these years, he’s still able to deliver a song," Houdek said. "Not just sing the lyrics, but when you listen to Tony Bennett you feel the song."
Bennett’s daughter, Antonia Bennett has been touring with her father and will open the performance with a collection of jazz/pop standards. Antonia is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Sony Legacy just released "Tony Bennett: The Classics," which showcases a compilation of selections from Bennett’s recent series of Duets CDs as well as solo versions of many catalog favorites.
"It’s going to be one of the concerts of the summer, along with James Taylor," Houdek said. "Everybody loves Tony Bennett ... he’s a real treat every time he comes back."
Shed prices for the Tony Bennett concert range from $49.50 to $97.50 and lawn seats cost $25. Bennett last appeared at Tanglewood in 2005 with the Count Basie Orchestra. Tickets for the Aug. 31 performance go on sale 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 8, at www.tanglewood.org, by calling (888) 266-1200, or by visiting the Symphony Hall Box Office.
