GREAT BARRINGTON -- A local man is facing multiple felony assault charges for allegedly spitting so much blood at police officers that it required 12 hours of biohazard cleanup.

Brian J. Meehan, 32, of Bridge Street, allegedly broke out a window at the Gypsy Joynt Cafe on Main Street after and then began fighting with patrons and staff in the parking lot about 10:30 p.m. Friday, according to Great Barrington Police.

When officers responded, several employees were holding down Meehan, who became combative with police as they took him into custody. While being transported to the police station, Meehan smashed his head through the cruiser's Plexiglas shield, cutting his head in the process, and began spitting blood on one of the officers, police said.

At the station, police had to use a stun gun to subdue Meehan, who still managed to spit blood all over two other officers.

Meehan was later transported to Fairview Hospital for treatment of his head laceration. The three officers were also treated at the hospital for exposure to blood-borne pathogens, police said.

It took a professional biohazard cleaning service 12 hours to clean and decontaminate the police station and cruiser, according to police.

Meehan was held on $10,000 bail over the weekend.

He pleaded not guilty in Southern Berkshire District Court on Monday to nine charges, including five counts of felony assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and two counts of destruction of property over $250 and single counts of misdemeanor disorderly conduct and assault and battery on a police officer.

Meehan was released by Judge Philip A. Beatty on $5,000 personal surety, according to the clerk's office. The Berkshire District Attorney's Office was asking for $5,000 cash bail.

He is represented by attorney J. Richard Ratcliffe, of Providence, R.I., and is due back in court for a pretrial hearing on May 12.

Ratcliffe told The Eagle he is "analyzing" the case and "going forward."

Sheffield and Stockbridge police provided assistance under mutual aid.
