SPRINGFIELD (AP) - Springfield's incoming police commissioner has signed a five-year contract that will pay him $167,000 the first year.
The contract starts June 1, when John Barbieri takes over from the retiring William Fitchet.
Barbieri's initial salary is the same as Fitchet's.
Barbieri, one of three department deputy chiefs interviewed for the job, was selected by Mayor Domenic Sarno last month.
The salary is subject to review annually.
The contract calls for Barbieri to "devote the amount of time and energy which is reasonably necessary for employee to faithfully perform the duties of Police Commissioner."
The contract also provides the commissioner a vehicle, a cellphone and 42 vacation days per year.
