To the editor of THE EAGLE:
I write as the moderator of the Berkshire Association of the United Church of Christ. We are the clergy members and lay leaders or about 20 churches here in Berkshire County. Formerly known as "Congregational," our churches were often founded when our towns were incorporated. Our buildings support many of the tall steeples in the Berkshires.
Our church's motto is "That They All May Be One." That message reminds me of the famous words of John Donne, "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. . . . and therefore can never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
In that unity of our common humanity, let me say: We all live in North Adams! We all lost our jobs with three days notice! We all need a food pantry! We all depend on SNAP for our daily bread! And we all cry out in the shock and pain of grief and loss! May we all know the mutual care and support of this unity, for we are one.
