EGREMONT -- Town halls in Egremont, Monterey and Mount Washington have been without Internet access this week due to an unidentified problem, and officials say it is unclear when the problem will be corrected.

The towns are customers of Troy, N.Y.-based Cornerstone Telephone, which has three employees working with multiple vendors trying to identify and correct the problem.

"What we are noticing is traffic isn't flowing correctly through the bandwidth," said Amanda Wheeler, who handles media relations for Cornerstone.

The Internet problem has impacted the three town halls and the Monterey Library, according to Wheeler. Egremont Town Hall has been without phone and Internet service.

The towns are part of The Massachusetts Broadband Initiative, which in February completed a 1,200-mile fiber-optic network throughout 120 Central and Western Massachusetts communities -- 19 of which are in the Berkshires.

The network provides services to municipal facilities that include town halls, police stations, and schools. Residential and commercial buildings have not yet been connected.

Ben Dobbs, deputy director of MBI, stated in a prepared statement the core MassBroadband 123 network itself is "operating normally."

He said the organization "is actively working with Axia, the network operator and service prov-
iders, to identify the cause of the problem and to restore service to the affected customers.

Not all customers of Cornerstone have been impacted: Otis has reported no service problems.

Melissa Noe, an executive secretary for Monterey, said the Police Department, Building Department, and other departments have been hampered in their ability to work. She has relied on the Internet connection on her cellphone to complete some tasks.

"[The Internet connection] had been great up to Monday," Noe said.

Mary Brazie, who serves as the Egremont Board of Selectmen's secretary, said she first started noticing problems last Wednesday and they intermittently continued until Monday, when the Town Hall completely lost Internet and phone service.

Many of the office programs are only accessible online, and she said the outage has put a halt to some town work.

"We've had plenty of people come in and say we can't [contact the] town," Brazie said.
