PITTSFIELD -- William Monterosso is on paid leave from his job as executive director of the BerkshireWorks Career Center, according to sources familiar with the operation.

Officials aren't commenting publicly on Monterosso's job status with the county's employment agency. Monterosso, who once headed Kentucky's Office of Employment and Training, was three months into the job.

Responding last week to an inquiry about Monterosso's status, Pittsfield Mayor Daniel L. Bianchi said "we're looking into some issues" and that the situation was "in the hands" of the city's personnel department. Bianchi declined to elaborate last week and reiterated in a follow-up message on Wednesday that he would not discuss personnel matters.

Bianchi appointed Monterosso, a Pittsfield native, to the post. Although the executive director's position is state-funded, Pittsfield's mayor appoints the person to fill it.

Monterosso did not return telephone messages left Wednesday on his cellphone and at BerkshireWorks. No one answered the door at his residence. Monterosso's voice was still on the BerkshireWorks executive director's voicemail on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Pittsfield's personnel department director, John D'Angelo, referred inquiries to City Solicitor Kathleen Degnan. Degnan did not return a call seeking comment.

A 1982 graduate of Taconic High School, Monterosso was hired by Bianchi in early January to replace former North Adams Mayor John Barrett III as the agency's executive director.

He officially replaced Barrett on Jan. 21.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Monterosso came to Pittsfield after having served as the executive director of the West Virginia Association of Rehabilitation Facilities since July 2012. WVARF is a nonprofit whose membership is comprised of community rehabilitiation programs that serve people with various disabilities.

Monterosso served as executive director of the Office of Employment and Training in Kentucky from 2010 to 2012, and as the program director of West Virginia's Workforce Investment Board.
