LENOX -- Essencials Day Spa on Pittsfield-Lenox Road is still open for business despite the sudden departures of five employees, owner Kelly Wright said on Monday.
According to Wright, rumors that Essencials was closing began to circulate after five of her 12 employees left abruptly two weeks ago.
"It kind of crippled me, of course," Wright said. "I had a lot of people with gift certificates. I didn’t feel right closing the doors."
Wright said she has been calling clients herself to tell them that Essencials has not closed.
"We’re still open," Wright said.
"I’m doing facials," she said. "We have seven people on staff and we’re trying to continue to move forward."
Essencials has been hampered by the continued economic downturn, Wright said, noting that the spa’s business is down about 30 percent from what it was at this time last year.
"We’ve been struggling to make ends meet," she said.
Wright believes the employees who left were upset that they weren’t making more money.
"They just didn’t like that we weren’t booming like we used to," she said, "and they just jumped ship."
Essencials is planning to hire two new stylists.
"We’re looking forward to a busy year," Wright said.
Wright said Essencials will be closed on Mondays from now on. But the spa will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. It is open until 8 p.m. on Thursday.
