PITTSFIELD -- A fire that damaged a pickup truck parked near the Crowne Plaza hotel early Thursday is under investigation by Pittsfield fire officials.

When firefighters responded to the fire on Edwin Street, which was reported around 12:43 a.m., the flatbed portion of the truck was engulfed in flames, according to Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cancilla.

The truck bed contained wood pallets and hot mix used for pavement patching. The deputy chief said the fire, which was quickly doused, does not appear to be suspicious.

The truck is registered to Hi-Way Safety Systems Inc., based in Rockland. Cancilla said the operator of the vehicle was staying overnight as a registered guest at the hotel.

No one was injured and no other property was damaged by the fire. Cancilla said the truck was burned but did not have to be towed.
