HOLYOKE -- Opening night didn't go too well for the North Adams SteepleCats.

The SteepleCats took a two-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but the Valley Blue Sox scored five times to beat the SteepleCats 7-4 Friday night at McKenzie Field.

The SteepleCats, who are at Sanford tonight before hosting the Blue Sox in their home opener Sunday afternoon at Joe Wolfe Field, scored three runs on four hits and an error in the top of the sixth inning.

With two outs and Ramon Valdez on first, designated hitter John Kinne of Great Barrington hit an RBI double and scored on Kyle Rich ardson's base hit. Richardson had reached second on a throwing error by Valley catcher Justin Morhardt and scored on Matt Schmidt's base hit.

The Blue Sox cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning against North Adams starter Shaefer Shepard. Shepard was relieved by Isaac Lippert to start the seventh, when the roof caved in.

The Blue Sox scored five runs on four hits and two costly SteepleCat errors.

North Adams went down in order in the eighth and the ninth to end the game.

Reliever Joe DiBenedetto, the second of three Blue Sox pitchers, got the win. Lippert took the loss.
