POWNAL, Vt. -- Wildstone Farm of Pownal pulls in a van to sell produce to Bennington residents every Saturday for the Bennington Farmers’ Market on the Walloomsac River next to the Bennington Station. What’s more, it has been doing so for almost as long as the farm has been operating: 25 years.
The farm became certified organic in 1989. Now with a year-round one-acre agricultural space, owners John and Joan Primmer employ a few people to help them provide fresh produce to their wholesale accounts, natural food stores and their customers as a part of a Community-Supported Agriculture.
"We started off homesteading, and it just grew from there," Joan Primmer said. "We were approached by some wholesalers and we decided to expand."
Wildstone Farm uses two different CSA models. It uses a debit-style system at the Bennington Farmers Market, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. It also uses an on farm CSA with 20 pick ups starting in June and going until the end of October. When there is demand, the Primmers offer a CSA over the winter months.
"We prefer to sell directly to people rather than to wholesalers because we always get comments and we enjoy that one on one interaction: All positive feedback," Primmer said.
The farm’s wholesale accounts include Buxton School and Wild Oats Market in Williamstown, Mass. The variety that the farm is growing changes from year to year, according to their consumers’ and accounts’ demands.
