SHEFFIELD -- The Board of Selectmen has approved a three-year loan package to pay for air conditioning of the second floor at Mount Everett Regional School.
The total package will cost about $150,000, according to district Superintendent David Hastings.
That sum would be split among the district’s five towns, he said.
The school district’s four other member towns of Monterey, Alford, New Marlborough and Egremont have already approved the plan, according to School Committee member Bonnie Silvers of Sheffield
Silvers told the board that classrooms on the second floor often topped 90 degrees, created a stifling atmosphere.
The district hoped to finish the work before students returned in the fall, she said.
The selectmen were, overall, supportive, but Chairman David A. Smith wondered why it took so long for the district to come before the board. Had this conversation been held a few weeks ago, he said, it would have moved along faster.
"I don’t want to say it was concerning to me, but it was something I wanted to talk about," he said.
The vote was unanimously in favor.
