LOWELL -- The Berkshire Force under-16 softball team, in its final tournament before the July 29 Babe Ruth Softball World Series, went 1-1 to start the 16-U All-American college showcase tournament on Friday.
The Force fell 5-0 to Showstoppers Navy in their first tournament game, but rebounded with a 2-1 walk-off win over the Maine Thunder.
A Mir Voller bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning led to her reaching second base. The next batter, pinch hitter Kacey Sondrini, laid down a bunt as well. A throwing error sent the ball into right field, allowing Voller to easily score the game-winning run.
Julia Murphy pitched a complete game for the win, striking out six batters and allowing five hits and one walk. Allie Hunt tripled in the fourth inning and scored on an Ashley Keegan single for the Force's first run of the game.
In the opener, "our bats went silent," Force coach Jim Clary wrote in a message to The Eagle. Hayley Tobin had two of the team's three hits, both singles. Voller had the other single. Emily Koldys took the loss on the mound.
The Force are scheduled for four round-robin games in the tournament today.
"This tournament is a big test for us, and so far we are doing OK," Clary wrote.
