WILLIAMSTOWN -- There's a new figure at the helm of Images Cinema, and he will bring 20 years of experience to the organization starting in September.

The cinema's board of directors on Tuesday announced that it had selected Doug Jones, of Los Angeles, to be the new executive director of the nearly 100-year-old, independent movie theater on Spring Street.

Jones, who starts in September, replaces Sandra Thomas, who had been Image's executive director for 12 years. Thomas announced in March that she would resign to seek other opportunities.

In a written statement, Jones said he was "honored" to be joining Images,

"I look forward to exploring new ideas and initiatives for Images' future," he said, "while also maintaining the organization's position as the premier venue for independent and international cinema in the Berkshires."

Jones most recently served as the associate director of programming at the Los Angeles Film Festival and Film Independent. He plans to relocate to Williamstown with his wife and school-age son, according to Images' board of directors.

Board chairman John Strachan praised Thomas' contributions to Images, and said Jones will be a worthy successor.

"[Thomas] did an extraordinary job for over a decade, and we were all shocked and saddened when she announced she wanted to leave Images," Strachan stated Tuesday in an email.

"Finding someone of [Jones'] experience and caliber gives us confidence that Images will continue to flourish.

Jones' past experience includes serving as the film and video programmer at the San Francisco International Film Festival and San Francisco Film Society and as program director of the Oak Street Cinema in Minneapolis. He has also written about film and film festivals for print and online publications.

"When I was fourteen, I took my first job in film, working behind the concession stand at a neighborhood movie theater," Jones said. "Since then, I've never wavered in my belief in the power and pleasure of film. I look forward to sharing my passion and knowledge with Images Cinema and with the entire community of the Northern Berkshires."
