PITTSFIELD -- A city man who stabbed his significant other is serving 15 months in jail.

According to police and prosecutors, Lawrence McCray Jr., 42, whose address is listed as unknown, stabbed a woman in the leg while the two drank together at the home of some friends on the night of March 1. The stabbing came only days after the couple had applied for a marriage license.

The 46-year-old victim told police McCray picked up a steak knife and stabbed her in the left leg and that the attack came "out of nowhere."

The couple was alone in the residence at the time. When their friends returned to their White Terrace apartment a few minutes later they found the woman bleeding heavily from the leg and blood on the couch and floor.

Police said McCray had blood on his hands.

The woman was taken to Berkshire Medical Center, where she was treated for her injury and later released.

The knife police said was used in the attack was recovered by investigators.

On Friday in Central Berkshire District Court, Judge Matthew J. Shea ordered the defendant to serve 15 months at the Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction.

McCray pleaded guilty to a single count of felony assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

His attorney, Kenneth G. Warren Jr., was asking the court to sentence McCray to a year in jail with six months to be served and the rest of the time suspended for a year with probation. During that time McCray would have had to stay away from alcohol and drugs.

Warren, at an earlier court hearing, said his client and the woman had a long history involving alcohol and that there were many "cross complaints" between the two, when both were charged with assault and battery on each other.

McCray has a six-page record that includes numerous assault and battery convictions.

The Berkshire District Attorney's Office was asking for 18 months in jail.

McCray was given credit for 152 days in confinement awaiting the outcome of the case and unable to make $2,500 bail.
