PITTSFIELD -- A city man who allegedly stole more than $5,000 from his former employer remains free after denying a felony charge.

Shane T. Street, 24, of Harvard Street, was stealing cash from bank deposit bags from Jan. 31 to April 15 while working as a manager at the Five Guys Burgers on Merrill Road in Pittsfield, according to Pittsfield Police detectives.

The investigation began in April after the owner became aware of discrepancies between deposits made by Street and the store records, according to a probable cause report.

Footage from store security cameras allegedly shows Street sticking the deposit bags full of money into his shirt and walking into the bathroom prior to taking the bags to the bank located two doors down from the restaurant.

Police said the thefts totaled $5,125.

Street was fired in April.

Police said Street missed several scheduled interviews with them.

The owner told police Street had been a good employee before the thefts. He said they have since changed how money there is handled.

On Friday, Street appeared in Central Berkshire District Court before Judge Matthew J. Shea in answer to a summons and denied a single count of felony larceny over $250 by single scheme

He was released on his own recognizance. The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office did not ask for bail.

Street is due back in court with attorney William Barry for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 25.
