PITTSFIELD -- A Pittsfield man police say broke into a city cafe and helped himself to pizza, beer and cash has been released after pleading not guilty to four felonies.
Daulton J. Young, 21, of Cheshire Road, broke into the East Side Cafe on Newell Street July 19 by kicking in the window in the front door, police said.
Besides eating and drinking, he allegedly made two phone calls to his girlfriend from the cafe's land line.
Cafe staff discovered the remnants of the meal the next morning. Police investigators said there was a half-eaten pizza, an empty beer bottle and other trash left on the bar. The owner said the perpetrator also ate a candy bar and a bag of chips and made off with $150 in cash.
Evidence from the scene was sent to the state crime lab to be analyzed.
On Friday, Young told police had no memory of the break-in and denied he was involved, according to a probable cause report.
Young was prone to blackouts from drinking, he allegedly told investigators.
He also was charged with attempting to break into his girlfriend's city residence on Aug. 7.
In that case, Young told police he had received a text from the young woman about her fighting with her mother and had gone over there to check on her, according to the report. He denied that he was trying to break into the residence.
Police continue to investigate whether he was connected to the July 19 breaking and entering at H & S Auto Parts at 1260 East St.
He pleaded not guilty in Central Berkshire District Court on Monday to breaking and entering in the nighttime for a felony, larceny from a building, vandalizing property and attempted breaking and entering. He was released on personal recognizance by Judge Frederic D. Rutberg.
The Berkshire District Attorney's Office did not ask for bail in the case.
Young is due back in court with attorney Glenn W. Keiderling Jr. on Sept. 23.
Before Monday's arraignment, Young had been out on $500 bail set on Friday by an assistant clerk magistrate.
