SPRINGFIELD -- The Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield will install its first bishop of Polish-American descent at St. Michael's Cathedral during a special Mass at 2 p.m.
The Most Rev. Mitchell Thomas Rozanski, 55, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Md., was named as the diocese's new spiritual leader by Pope Francis in June. He succeeds the Most Rev. Timothy McDonnell, who submitted his resignation as bishop on his 75th birthday -- Dec. 23, 2012 -- as required by canonical law.
The Baltimore native is the diocese's ninth bishop since its creation in 1870. The diocese has about 230,000 Catholics in 81 parishes in Western Massachusetts.
A public reception is also planned at the Big E in West Springfield.
The Eagle will carry live video feed of the ceremony, courtesy of the diocese, beginning at 2 p.m. The video feed can be found at: http://www.berkshireeagle.com/news/ci_26320362
