PITTSFIELD -- An equipment failure at a substation left roughly 8,000 customers without electricity for nearly an hour Saturday morning.

Kevin Witkos, media representative with Western Massachusetts Electric Co., said the failure occurred at the Oswald Avenue substation at 10:03 a.m. He said the outage was caused by an equipment failure, attributed to the conductor.

Service was restored for the majority of customers by 10:45 a.m., he said, and the remaining couple hundred customers had power restored by 11:15 a.m.

The outage led to numerous traffic lights and businesses in downtown Pittsfield going dark and contributed to little to no cellphone service for AT&T customers.

Berkshire Eagle readers on social media reported outages in the area closest to the city center, including West Housatonic, North and South streets.

The Pittsfield Police Department reported no incidents or accidents related to the power outage.
