BOSTON >> The two longest-serving City Council members in Boston have lost to two newcomers.

The Boston Globe reports ( that high school teacher Annissa Essaibi George defeated at-large Councilor Stephen Murphy, who served 17 years.

Attorney Joy Campbell also defeated nearly 30-year Councilor Charles Yancey for the District 4 seat representing Mattapan and Dorchester.

Their wins double the number of women on the 13-member council to four.

Murphy and Yancey's defeat comes just days after the council was roundly criticized for voting to give themselves $12,000 pay raises.

Election officials said turnout was low in the election, which did not include a mayoral election.

Just over 50,000 people cast ballots, or about 14 percent of registered voters, the Globe reported.

Other council incumbents who faced challengers easily won re-election.
