PALMER >> A western Massachusetts district attorney's office says a doctor has been indicted on dozens of charges including unlawfully prescribing oxycodone and other drugs and making false Medicaid claims.

Dr. Fernando Jayma was indicted on Monday on charges including illegally prescribing controlled substances, false Medicaid claims and larceny.

The 73-year-old Ludlow doctor denied the charges on Tuesday in Palmer and has been released on bond.

Authorities say Jayma was prescribing medications to patients who had tested positive for heroin and other non-prescription drugs. They say he also had other doctors see his patients, then billed MassHealth as if he had treated them.

Jayma has forfeited his medical license. He is expected back in court for a pretrial hearing on Jan. 25.

WGGB-TV reports there was no answer at his home.
