SPRINGFIELD >> An attorney representing a western Massachusetts man apprehended on an outstanding warrant says the knife officers found on her client was a Christmas gift for his mother.
The Springfield Republican reports (http://bit.ly/1NTE9Rj ) Luis Suarez was charged in Springfield District Court with carrying a dangerous weapon after officers allegedly found an 8-inch blade on him while pursuing a warrant from a prior case in Holyoke.
Stephanie Woods says the present was wrapped and her client was essentially arrested for being a good son.
In addition to the Holyoke case, Suarez pleaded not guilty in November to charges stemming from a crash on Springfield's Berkshire Avenue involving an electrical transformer.
Assistant District Attorney John Wendel says Suarez's criminal record also includes a manslaughter conviction.
Suarez is due back in court Jan. 15.
