ALBANY >> A 20-year-old Albany County woman was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for murdering her five-year-old cousin in 2014.

Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that Tiffany VanAlstyne of Berne, was sentenced to state prison by Judge Stephen W. Herrick in Albany County Court on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016.

As part of a plea bargain, VanAlystne pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder on Nov. 24, 2015.

VanAlystne was babysitting her cousin, Kenneth White, whose father resides in North Adams, and his two younger sisters on December 18, 2014, at her parents Thacher Park Road home in Knox when the murder occurred. According to police, VanAlystne told police that two masked men broke in and abducted Kenneth. An Amber Alert was issued as police searched for the child. His body was later found 100 feet away from the home, buried in a snow bank.
