BOSTON >> A former member of a Boston-based Teamsters local is heading to prison for shaking down businesses with other members of the union.

James Deamicis of Quincy was sentenced Wednesday in Boston to a year in prison. He was found guilty in November of extortion and conspiracy to commit extortion.

Prosecutors say the 52-year-old Deamicis and other members of Teamsters Local 82 extorted businesses including the Westin Copley Hotel and House of Blues by threatening to picket and disrupt businesses if the entities didn't give jobs to union members.

Two co-defendants were convicted of extortion and racketeering and received prison time.

Deamicis said in court that he believed he was engaging in his rights to union picketing. He says he plans to appeal his conviction.
