WESTFIELD, MASS. >> A Westfield mother whose 1-year-old son was taken to the hospital last month for a suspected heroin overdose could face a child endangerment charge.

Detective James Renaudette tells the Boston Herald the possible misdemeanor charge is based on the discovery of empty heroin bags and syringes in the family's apartment. Police have said the overdose was "unsubstantiated."

The 31-year-old woman will be called to a closed hearing before a clerk magistrate, who will determine if there's enough evidence for the charge.

Police say under the state's good Samaritan law, which protects anyone who seeks medical assistance for an overdose, the woman cannot be charged with other crimes.

The boy's father says his son may have choked on something and preliminary urine testing showed no opioids in his system.
