CHATHAM, MASS. >> Marine biologists are trying to figure out what caused the death of a North Atlantic right whale calf, one of just 14 born this winter.
The calf was found dead Thursday off the coast of Chatham on Cape Cod.
Misty Niemeyer, necropsy coordinator for the International Fund for Animal Welfare, tells the Cape Cod Times (http://bit.ly/24xrpgk) that the endangered whale about 27 to 28 feet long died recently.
The calf was last spotted April 28 in Cape Cod Bay with its mother. It was first spotted January 12 off Georgia.
Chatham Harbormaster Stuart Smith said the whale appeared to have been hit by a vessel, but Niemayer says authorities won't know for sure until a necropsy is conducted Friday.
There are an estimated 500 North Atlantic right whales left.
