NORTH ADAMS — A North Adams police officer was injured on Monday after his cruiser struck a mailbox post on Ashland Street.
The officer, identified as Josh Tracy, was conscious and able to stand when North Adams police, fire, and EMS arrived on the scene, according to North Adams Police Director Michael Cozzaglio. Tracy is not believed to have suffered any life-threatening injuries, but he was transported to the North Adams Campus of Berkshire Medical Center for evaluation.
"He was visibly shaken up," Cozzaglio said. "We want to get him checked out."
Tracy was heading south in his cruiser about noon when he failed to navigate the bend in Ashland Street near the intersection with Church Street. The vehicle apparently drifted completely over the northbound lane and struck a thick post, dislodging the mailbox that sat atop it.
Cozzaglio said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Weapons and a laptop were unloaded from the cruiser, which was towed for repairs.
Tracy was appointed to the department full-time earlier this year.
