NORTHAMPTON, MASS. >> A Massachusetts man is singing the praises of his local police department after an officer settled a misunderstanding by paying for the man's gas.

Paul Zabawa tells The Daily Hampshire Gazette he was in desperate need of fuel on Monday when he pulled into a Northampton gas station with just $1.79 on him. He gave the money to the attendant but accidentally pumped $20 worth of gas into his tank.

The attendant said he would have to call police.

At that point, Officer Michael Szawlowski pulled into the station to buy water before a detail.

The officer paid for the gas and when Zabawa offered to repay him, said "Don't worry about it at all."

The officer says he was just trying to resolve a simple misunderstanding.
