PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Organizers of a gun buyback in Rhode Island say the effort brought in 186 guns and all of the weapons will be destroyed.
The privately funded buyback was held Saturday in Providence, Bristol and Central Falls. Officials from Pawtucket, Lincoln, and Cumberland also participated.
In all, 99 firearms were collected in Providence, 49 in Bristol and 38 in Central Falls. Of the total, 97 were rifles and 89 were handguns.
The weapons were collected anonymously. In return, authorities distributed Visa gift cards ranging from $50 to $200, depending on the make and condition of the firearm. The total value of the cards given away was $12,650.
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, who organized the effort with others, said if the program prevented even one accident or tragedy, it was worth it.
