The recent fire at the Curtis was an event that reared so many different needs and resources. Martha Joyner, PHA director, her staff and board should be commended. It goes without saying the fire department and police acted quickly and ensured the safety of all. Susan Holmes, senior services coordinator of the Lenox Council on Aging, was instrumental in providing transportation and food to our displaced residents at the Days Inn.

I want to take a moment and recognize some "behind the scenes" forces. The Red Cross was there within hours and is still involved. Laura and Kevin from Days Inn went above and beyond. Their establishment went from a motel to a "Senior Center" within hours and for what turned out to be weeks. They treated the residents with dignity and respect. For that we are so thankful.

Elder Services of Berkshire County, without hesitation, provided hot meals once, sometimes twice a day. It delivered the food to the Inn and never once questioned the financial impact it may have on its program. I would ask that if anyone is looking for a way to give back, please send a donation to Elder Services c/o its nutrition program. It is such a wonderful community resource that has or will eventually impact you or a family member.

It is moments like these that make me proud to have the privilege of residing and raising a family here in Lenox.
