People wonder why the suicide rate is so high among those who have served or are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The answer is simple. You can’t keep sending the same people back to the same wars time after time as we have been doing over the last 10 years. There will be dire results. Humans are humans.
As far as the slow-motion effort by our veterans to get help for their problems, I know firsthand what they are going through. I came down with two incurable diseases while serving during the Korean War -- narcolepsy and sleep paralysis. I’ve never been able to get any help from our government. Congressman John Olver tried to help me and he sent me a copy of the answer he got. No.
A representative of the Disabled Veterans of America told me point-blank that I had the diseases before I entered the service. I didn’t know what either disease was before I got them. I still have both today, they don’t go away. Happy Memorial Day. Don’t forget to put the American flag on my casket.
