I was very pleased to read a recent editorial ("Realism on sex education," May 25) plus Thursday’s article regarding the need for sex education! It is an important issue, and needs to be addressed.
I have been retired as a staff member of the Berkshire County Chapter of the American Red Cross for 20 years. During my tenure there, the National Red Cross asked local chapters to begin programs about AIDS education. Our chapter established a steering committee, a medical speakers bureau and began arranging presentations to various school administrators.
Thanks to Dr. Jon Valigorsky, Dr. Paula Aucoin and Dr. Noel Blagg, who volunteered their time, we were able to meet with various PTA groups and finally go into the school classrooms with much-needed information. While we were not talking about birth control, we were talking about disease prevention.
That was over 20 years ago. It is time to go beyond that and include the issues of pregnancy.
