To the editor of THE EAGLE:
I have seen so much controversy in this county on the political front for the last four years, and without siding with anyone, all I can say is this area is in deep trouble. Whatever people hope to achieve it’s not working.
I have lived here over 20 years and I have never lived in a place that is so economically unstable and socially repressed in my life. What was once a rural and culturally unique area has turned into a repressive and socially divided nightmare. I run a small business and have had calls every week on my phone book ad for people looking for work, sounding quite desperate, too.
It’s obvious by the depressed way people look lately, and by all the businesses closing around town, Berkshire County is in one of the biggest economic downfalls it has ever suffered. On top of that, prices are rising by leaps and bounds, and many people have already left the area. Is this really what you want? I hear a lot of complaining but I don’t see any of the small towns around here working on any solutions for the future. Many places in this country have already rebounded from economic plight, but I’m afraid the way things are going in this area we haven’t seen the worse yet.
Bankruptcy filings all over the place is what I’ve been told. Some people say it’s improving. Where? What is your solution? Prices rising, taxes rising, but I don’t see incomes rising. What does that say to you? Your citizens can only work so many jobs at one time.
I feel very sorry for you Berkshires. Your leaders obviously think this is what is good for you.
Welcome to your new Russia.
