To the editor of THE EAGLE:
I am writing to express my sincere thanks to Mary Shogry-Hayer of the district attorney’s office, Officer Jeremy Grosz, Lt. Katherine Sonsini, Captain Dale Newberry, Sheriff Thomas Bowler and the entire staff of the Berkshire County Jail and House of Correction for hosting a wonderfully informative visit of the Pittsfield Froio Center Triad program to Cheshire Road facility. Thirty-three seniors from the Froio Center got to see first-hand the inside of a correctional facility and what it means to be incarcerated.
They were oriented to the booking procedures and were able to observe residents in their daily routine. They also were given information about the electronic security system and safety protocols. The sheriff emphasized that safety was of the utmost importance and that most of those in the facility are good people that have made some poor decisions. The tour ended with a discussion regarding the department’s rescue and recovery efforts on September 11, 2001.
Triad programs exist throughout Massachusetts and are a collaboration of law enforcement, support and protective services and senior centers. For more information please contact the Froio Center at (413) 499-9346.
The writer is director of the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center.
