LONGMEADOW -- Three county boys reached the second day in this year’s Western Mass. individual tennis tournament.
Second seed Tanner DeVarrenes of Lee, Pittsfield’s Tom Cimini and Monument’s Kevin Li all survived the first two rounds of the tournament to advance to today’s play at Longmeadow High School.
DeVarennes shut out Mount Greylock’s Jonah Majumder, 6-0, 6-0. Li defeated Conor Dempsey of Pittsfield in a tight one, 6-3, 7-6 (5) and Cimini stopped Chicopee’s Pat Godman 6-2, 6-3.
In Northampton, Sam White and Shea Caligari of Monument Mountain, along with Taconic’s Emily Rice have advanced to the round of 16 of the Western Mass. girls tennis tournament at Smith College.
Three other singles players, Drury’s Chelsea Lefebvre, the Spartans’ Courtney Freadman and Lee’s Emma Forget, were defeated in earlier rounds.
Mount Greylock’s doubles team of Margot Besnard and Alexandra Deveaux were knocked out in the second round of the event by top seeds Hannah Ashley and Ashley Toebes of Longmeadow. The 16th seeded Spartan doubles team had reached the second round with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jess Waltis and Courtney Kimball of Greenfield.
White, the No. 10 seed, is the highest county seed in the girls tournament. She had a bye in the first round, and stopped No. 23 Brianna Flahive of Sci-Tech 7-6, 7-6.
Caligari defeated Meg Ryan of Holyoke 6-2, 6-0, and then upset No. 12 seed Hannah Levy of Northampton, 6-2, 6-0.
Rice scored a pair of upsets to get to today’s play. She stopped Cassandra Gonsalves of Ludlow, seeded 21st, 6-0, 6-2. In the second round, Rice knocked off the No. 12 seed, Tamara Kuziemko of Chicopee, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5
Forget and Freadman both fell to Rachel Stevens of Longmeadow. Stevens knocked off Forget 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, and Freadman 6-4, 6-2.
Friday’s Boys Lacrosse
E. Longmeadow 13, Hoosac 1
ADAMS -- East Longmeadow scored the first 10 goals of the game on Friday to cruise past the Hurricanes.
Blake Gaylord had Hoosac’s only goal in the second quarter. The Hurricanes managed only 10 shots while East Longmeadow fired 31 shots down on Hoosac goalie Seth Kuta. Kuta made 18 stops.
