SPRINGFIELD (AP) - The former head of a veteran's center in Springfield has been charged with stealing more than $35,000.
The state attorney general's office says 53-year-old Christopher Adam Scott, former executive director of the Mason Square Veteran's Outreach Center, stole both from the organization itself and skimmed from federal grants awarded to the center.
The center provided counseling, benefits, and health information to veterans.
Scott was indicted Tuesday by a Hampden County Grand Jury on charges of larceny over $250 and procurement fraud.
Authorities say Scott stole more than half of a $31,000 federal grant meant to make the center handicapped accessible by falsifying receipts, and also stole $20,000 from the center's bank accounts through cash withdrawals, checks written to cash, and unauthorized loans.
