SARASOTA, Fla. -- Chris Davis hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to lead the Baltimore Orioles to their fifth straight win to start spring training, 5-3 over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

Boston brought most of its regulars, but third baseman Will Middlebrooks had a scary moment in the first inning when he appeared to injure his right wrist after swinging at a pitch from Tillman. Middlebrooks, who broke the wrist last Aug. 10, left the game, but said it was a precaution and that he was fine.

It's the first time Baltimore, which was using a split-squad against the Red Sox, has won its first five in spring since 2001.

Chris Tillman allowed a hit and two walks in 12 3 innings for the Orioles.

Ortiz takes leave

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has left the team for a few days to return to the Dominican Republic for a personal matter.

Before Wednesday night's game against the Baltimore Orioles, Boston manager John Farrell said that Ortiz, who has yet to play this spring training, should be back by Friday.

Farrell declined to say what Ortiz's personal matter was.
