Undefeated Lee High School leads a list of five local volleyball squads -- 63 percent of all the volleyball teams in Berkshire County -- into Western Mass. postseason play this weekend.
In addition to the 19-0 Wildcats, seeded third, Lenox (13-4) is seeded fourth, Wahconah (13-7) is fifth and St. Joseph's (10-9) is 12th in the Division III tournament.
Pittsfield, with a 10-8 mark, is the No. 8 seed in the Division II bracket.
The Wildcats are the only unbeaten team in the Division II or III tournaments.
But they were seeded behind 18-1 Frontier, the two-time defending state champion, and Mahar, a team that played Frontier twice on the year and had a schedule laden with Division II tournament schools, including top seed Minnechaug, No. 2 seed Longmeadow and No. 3 Agawam.
Lee will face the winner of No. 6 Turners Falls and No. 11 Belchertown on Monday at 6:30 in Lee.
Ed Paquette, coach of No. 4 Lenox, said he was pleased with his team's position. The Millionaires will host South Hadley (10-8), the No. 13 seed, Saturday night at 5 p.m.
"It's day-to-day," he said when asked to assess how well his team is playing. "If you had asked me [Wednesday], I would have said we weren't ready. But [Thursday], I was very pleased with how well we practiced."
Paquette said his team had a few bumps and bruises, "and we've had some people out, but they're healing and starting to come back. I think we'll be ready."
In another contest involving local teams, Wahconah hosts St.
This is the first time the Generals have hosted a postseason volleyball match since 2006, according to coach Brian Lawton. Pittsfield was last in the tournament in 2009, said Lawton.
The Generals will face No. 9 Central, who comes into the tournament at 10-10, on Saturday night at 5:30. Lawton said he didn't know a lot abut the Panthers, but said his players are excited to be hosting a home game.
"I think we're playing pretty well right now," he said. "I think we can play with anyone in the county. It's a matter of being consistent for a whole game."
Lawton said he's not looking ahead to the rest of the tournament.
"We're just happy to have a game in front of our fans," he said.
