WILLIAMSTOWN -- Sophomore goalie Sean Dougherty made 28 saves for his first career shutout as Williams beat St. Olaf 4-0 in the Ephs' home opener Friday night, ending the visitor's three-game winning streak.

The shutout was not only Dougherty's first, but the first for the Ephs since Ryan Purdy shut out Trinity 5-0 on Jan. 15, 2011.

The Ephs had to weather a late storm as Williams' Matt Doyle received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for hitting from behind at 15:28, but St. Olaf could not get on the board.

Evan Dugdale put the Ephs up for keeps at 7:18 of the first period. Freshman defenseman Greg Johnson got his first Williams goal at 13:44 of the second period, and exactly 18 seconds later, Taylor Carmola got the rebound of a Dugdale shot and put it behind St. Olaf goalie Steve Papciek.

Peter Mistretta netted his second goal of the year at 6:23 of the third period.

Williams (2-1) outshot St. Olaf 32-28.

St. Olaf (5-4-1) will play at Babson tonight before heading back to Minnesota.

The Ephs will host Gustavus Adolphus tonight at 7.

Amherst's Mike Rowbotham's goal at 18:27 of the third period tied the game.
