LAKELAND, Fla. -- The MCLA baseball team ended its Florida sojourn in the winter home of the Detroit Tigers on a losing note Friday.
The Trailblazers played a doubleheader against Bowdoin and dropped 3-2 and 5-0 decisions. With the sweep, MCLA finishes its trip 1-7, while Bowdoin is now 6-1.
Cody Weaver pitched well in the opener, giving up three runs on four hits. But three Bowdoin pitchers -- starter Christian Martin and relievers Dave Bernstein and Mike Levine -- held the Trailblazers to five hits and one earned run. MCLA had the tying run on second with two outs in the top of the seventh, but couldn't bring it home.
In the nightcap, MCLA's Tyler Benoit and Bowdoin's Harry Ridge were locked in a pitchers duel through four innings. The Polar Bears got to Benoit for three runs in the top of the fifth, including a leadoff home run by Matt Savard. That proved to be enough as Kevin McDonough and Dave Zabinsky came on to preserve the two-hit shutout.
MCLA shortstop J.T. Ferraro had the big offensive day. Ferraro was 4 for 7 and drove in a run.
