PITTSFIELD -- The Mount Greylock defense disrupted the Pittsfield offense Friday, forcing three sacks and two interceptions in a 28-6 victory at Wahconah Park.
The Generals opened with a sack on the first play of the game, and an interception followed two plays later.
Constant pressure from the Mounties defense kept the Generals off schedule all night.
"Our quarterback was running around and we didn’t give him any help," Pittsfield coach Brian Jezewski said. "We didn’t catch the ball, Greylock caught the balls, and made plays when they needed to."
The Greylock interception led to a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brodie Altiere to Mike McCormack, putting the Mounties up 6-0.
The early score put the Pittsfield on its heels. Greylock coach Shawn Flaherty said the early score forced the Generals to be one-dimensional.
"I think we were fortunate in that our a couple of touchdowns helped us out and forced their hand," Flaherty said. "We knew they were going to start to throw, but up until then I thought they ran their offense pretty effectively."
The Generals tried pounding the Greylock defense with dives up the middle. But after a 15-yard chop block penalty. The team was thrown off schedule and forced to look to the air. After two incompletions and a Shade scramble, the Mounties took over on their own 25.
Pittsfield would respond, however, with an impressive goal-line stand.
The Generals did rally before the half, thanks to Shade’s arm. After two straight completions and a 15-yard scramble, the Generals were in position to cut into the Greylock lead.
Shade found receiver Amancho Adopo in the end zone, but he was ruled out of bounds by an official to end the half.
Pittsfield forced a Greylock interception to open the second half, but could not capitalize on the opportunity. The final blow for Pittsfield came on a second-and-long after a penalty. Shade fired a pass off a receiver’s hands and into Altiere’s for a 45 yard interception and score.
Colby Masse added a 29 yard touchdown run in the fourth for the Mounties. Shade threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Kolbe Muzzy with a minute left in the game to put Pittsfield on the board.
The Mounties limited Pittsfield to 57 yards through the air and 80 yards on the ground on 21 carries.
Altiere led the way for Greylock, completing seven of 14 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. Altiere complimented his receivers for getting open for him down the field.
"It worked out good. The boys ran their patterns well. ...We didn’t connect on all of them, but they were right there, which was good," Altiere said.
Clement added 84 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
