NORTH ADAMS -- Monument Mountain football coach Bill LaGrant said a bye week is the most difficult week for a coach.
"Nobody likes a bye week," LaGrant said. "We tried to take it easy on the guys to alleviate boredom. But also keep them in shape and keep them focused."
LaGrant added he feared his team would come out sluggish after a week away from the field. He was half right.
The offense took some time to get going, but the defense pitched a shutout, beating Drury winning 26-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans (3-3) scored three times in the second half as they hit the .500 mark for the first time in at least a decade.
The Spartan defense smothered Drury, pressuring quarterback Kareen Beckett, forcing an interception and several sacks.
On offense, Drury held Monument scoreless in the first quarter. The Spartans did not get on the board until a 3-yard touchdown run from Peter Oggiani with a minute left in the second quarter.
Oggiani scored in the third from 2 yards out and again in the fourth from 15 to ice the game for Monument. He said his offensive line and his fellow running backs deserve credit for his successful day.
"We started out pretty slow. Drury played well on defense, but our guys were resilient," Oggiani said. "We came back in the second quarter and I couldn’t have done it without my line [and] Terrance Powell and Marc Leon-Duque, my fellow running backs."
Oggiani said the offense had to step in up a notch because running back Malik Wilbon sat out the game with an injured knee.
LaGrant said the Lee game is one that his players look forward to all year. With a chance to go over the .500 win mark on the line for Monument. The rivalry game could get even more fierce.
"The Housatonic River Rivalry is alive and well," LaGrant said. "Both teams are going to be really amped for it."
Drury coach Bill Bryce declined comment after the game.
