PITTSFIELD -- With one slalom race remaining in the regular season, the Monument Mountain girls Alpine team is making things a little interesting.

Led by Emily Martin’s second slalom win, the Spartans ended Taconic’s four-race winning streak Monday night. Monument had three racers in the top 10 and had a combined time of 197.45. Taconic was second, a little more than three seconds behind.

"It’s the most exciting part for me, being able to lead my team to our first victory of the year," said Martin. "That was really exciting. I was just hoping that all my teammates would get down."

Martin, Micaela Bartlett and Jennifer Evans had top-five finishes to give the Spartans the win.

Monument’s Trent Pfeiffer, meanwhile won his fifth race in as many starts. Pfeiffer and Thomas Berle finished in the top five and the Spartans won another slalom. Monument has tightened its hold on the lead in the boys standings.

If the teams can wrap up the regular season on Wednesday, the Coaches Invitational will take place Monday at Bousquet Ski Area.

Martin won the first slalom last Monday. This week, she was the fourth racer out of the gate and set the time to beat by skiing the hill in 43.5 seconds.

"I was a little bit conservative at the top and tried to pick up speed as I went. I kind of tried to remember my run last week and imitate that," she said. "That turned out well for me.

This Monday’s run turned out just as well. Skiing on a hard surface, Martin said the course was set up to her liking.

"It was a little bit turnier this week in my opinion, which I like," she said. "I train for that. It was good to see that tonight."

Martin, Evans and Bartlett were Monument’s first three skiers on the race list. Not only did all three finish, but all three skied in under 47.5 seconds. Taconic’s Michaela Craft separated Bartlett from a No. 2 finish, while Evans was fifth.

The Braves had a good night with five skiers in the top 10, but their elapsed time total was 3.16 seconds behind Monument’s.

"I’m glad that they got Taconic tonight. I knew they could do it from last week," Monument coach Pete Dunham said. "Micaela did the right thing by backing down and taking third. Jen did good with a bobble and ended up fifth. We did really good."

Lenox’s Ella King was fourth to wrap up the top five.

In the boys race, it was five times up the Bousquet race hill and five times down a winner for Pfeiffer. The Monument junior won all three giant slaloms and started slalom with a win last week.

It didn’t take long in the boys slalom to set the time to beat, but it wasn’t Pfeiffer who set it. Steve Feathers of St. Joseph was the third racer out of the gate, and he clocked in at 41.65.

"I know what most racers [who go before] do. Steven was right before me, so I wasn’t able to hear his time," Pfeiffer said. "I know he always puts a good run together. I was expecting it to be a tough time to beat."

But not that tough. Pfeiffer was seven-hundredths of a second shy of breaking the 40-second mark, as he finished his race in 40.07.

"I didn’t have any expectations" of winning the first five races, he said. "I was just hoping to do my best. So far, it’s turned out to be a really good season."

Berle’s fourth-place finish to go with Pfeiffer’s win helped the Spartans take the slalom. Kevin Marzotto’s 49.09 helped the Spartans get the win.

Pittsfield was the other team with two top-10 finishers: Erich Maynard finished fifth and Garrett Dempsey was eighth.

Mount Greylock’s Ryan Kuhn took third overall.

"The boys did great and the girls did awesome tonight," said Dunham, the Monument coach. "I’m really proud of them."
