SHEFFIELD -- At the last possible moment, the Lee boys qualified for the Western Massachusetts Division IV basketball tournament.
Heamon Williams scored 35 points and was 12 for 12 from the free throw line as the Wildcats beat Mount Everett 62-49. The win puts the Wildcats at 10-10, and it gives them the tourney berth.
"We played like a team on the ropes," Lee coach Dan Korte said. "We played like it was the first round of our tournament."
Not like the first round was really the first round because, had the Eagles won, the Wildcats would be home putting away the basketballs.
Kenny Krom had 14 points to lead the Eagles. The Lee defense held Mount Everett's Malik Wilbon to eight points.
Hoosac Valley 70, Pittsfield 69
CHESHIRE -- Hoosac Valley led by five points with 1:05 remaining in the fourth quarter. Pittsfield scored four, but couldn't get over the hump and the Hurricanes held on.
"The last six times [against Pittsfield] the game was decided by three points or less," said Hoosac coach Bill Robinson, whose team hadn't won any of those games. "We finally caught a break tonight."
The Hurricanes fell behind 23-9 early in the second quarter and trailed 33-27 at halftime. But Trevor Alibozek scored 12 of his team's 23 points in the third quarter.
"It's great to see a senior step up," said Robinson. "His third quarter was huge."
Jameson Coughlan had 15 points for Hoosac, Matt Koperniak had 14 and Alibozek finished with 12.
Anthony Jones led Pittsfield with a game-high 20 points and Bryce Daley had 16. The Hurricane defense held Amancho Adopo to 10 points.
