After one day of the MIAA All-State wrestling meet, just one Berkshire County competitor is still wrestling.
Mount Greylock 132-pounder Travis Hilchey went 3-1 on Friday at Lowell's Tsongas Arena, and advanced to the fourth round of the consolation bracket. The Mountie, who took third place last week at the Division III state meet, rebounded from a second-round loss in the championship bracket Friday to register three straight consolation victories.
He beat Haverhill's Reece Millington 6-2 in his first consolation match, then pinned Foxborough's Austin Gutierrez in 4:44 before picking up a 6-0 win over Winchester's Garrett Ludwig.
"My first match, I kind of wasn't really in the game. My head wasn't in it, and I ended up losing," Hilchey said. "But later on, I realized I had to step it up. I wrestled a couple of tough kids; the last match, he was really strong. I kept my positioning and came out with the wins."
The next test will be Hilchey's toughest, as he'll face Division III state champ Brendan Weir of Hampshire today. The two met in the Western Mass. D-III championship match, with Weir earning the win.
"I realize that, the last time I wrestled him, I wrestled really defensive," Hilchey said. "I need to open up and be aggressive if I want to beat Brendan."
Even if Hilchey loses, he's still alive in the consolation bracket. The top six wrestlers in each weight class advance to the New England championship meet, so Hilchey could still move on if he suffers a second loss. A win, though, and he's automatically in the New England brackets.
"There's no easy way to get there," Greylock coach Ray Miro said. "When you get to New Englands, and there are 22 kids in a weight class, it's tough."
All other Berkshire County wrestlers have been knocked out of the double-elimination tournament, with just one -- Mount Everett's Bradley Lupiani at 126 pounds -- picking up a win in the championship bracket.
Lupiani, the D-III state runner-up, beat Winchester's Enderson Naar 10-4 in the second round before falling 4-3 to Minnechaug's Anthony Monteiro in the quarterfinals. In a rematch of last week's D-III state title match, Lupiani then lost 5-0 to Lynnfield-North Reading's Eric Kerr in wrestlebacks.
Monument Mountain's Jonah Christianson earned an injury-default win in the consolation brackets, but was pinned twice at 182 pounds. Berkshire County's other D-III state runner-up, Johnny Colon of Mount Greylock, went 0-2 on the day at 182.
C.J. Lillie of Greylock went 1-2 at 145 pounds, while Taconic's Dave Jones went 0-2 at 220.
"They wrestled well, but it's tough here," Miro said.
